How many of you tweet? I’ve looked into it before and I can’t really figure out what to do or how to do it. There’s probably some really simple steps that I’m just looking over but in the meantime, I think I’m missing out on something big.
Jack Dorsey definitely knew what he was doing when he started this new fad. He says he was lucky enough to “recognize a fortunate situation and take advantage of it.” I think “lucky” might be an understatement.
Dorsey believes that due to the popularity of texting, tweeting was able to take off as users were used to talking in few words and abbreviations. I’ve never thought of comparing the two but it makes sense. We like to get out as much as we can in as little time as possible.
One thing that didn’t go so well with this new social network was that Dorsey didn’t take the time to gather analytics or data on the system. As we’ve seen from the past video article, everyone is competing on analytics. This data helps to make better decisions and allows companies to reach their full potential. While Mr. Dorsey may have “lucked” out on his product, I wonder what would have been done differently if he had taken a look into analytics on the forefront. Maybe Twitter wouldn’t have needed a brand new site revamp?
Katherine, I have to admit I am not a tweeter, in fact I have never even looked into it. All of my twitter knowledge comes from the abundance of media attention the site has received. I assume that it is similar to Facebook status; a website that allows you to tell people what you are doing or thinking and see what the friends and celebrities you follow are doing. While I think it is cool that you could have a celebrity respond to a comment you have posted on their tweet, I also find it a bit disturbing. Does society have no since of privacy anymore? I find it shocking some of the things people post on Facebook or Twitter, especially celebrities. Every time I turn on an Entertainment News show, some celebrity is complaining about the paparazzi invading their privacy, yet they are posting their every thought and action on their Twitter account for everyone to see….End of rant.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I do agree with you that Mr. Dorsey got more than just “lucky” with his creation of this site, and in the importance of collecting data and analytics. Mr. Dorsey probably never expected the site to be so successful and, therefore didn’t foresee that he would need to conduct a website revamp. I guess that just shows you how important conducting research and collecting data is in ANY business venture.
I think tweeting has gotten a little out of hand. No one needs to know where you are and what you are doing at every point in the day! I signed up for a twitter account and "follow" a few celebrities. It's ridiculous! Paris Hilton tells her followers good morning and good night every day....
ReplyDeletePeople divulge way too much information to total strangers. This form of social networking can be dangerous, especially when people don't use caution.
